Skykomish River

[ Whitewater Trips | Family Floats | PHOTO GALLERY | Packages/Accomodations ]

A perfect day on the Sky!

This State of Washington protected Scenic River is the most diverse of all raftable rivers in Washington.  Want heart pounding whitewater, this is the best in the State.  Need a lazy beautiful river, just right for kids and families, then the lower section is for you.  This is our Home River and no one runs it like we do.  Most companies come and go on this river, but Alpine Adventures brings you the best guides and program just one hour from Seattle.  Incredible!!!

Boulder Drop on the Main Section of the Skykomish

The Main Skykomish River.

Ah, Boulder Drop! This rapid causes the hearts of river guides to pound as they plunge their raft into the heart of the thundering class IV-V rapids. When the river is at 7000 cubic feet per second (CFS) or above, it becomes solid Class V and you need a great team with one of our Skykomish expert seasoned veterans to guide you through. We always stop and scout this rapid, as some of you will choose to walk around, especially at big water!

Boulder Drop is not the only rapid on the Main Section of the Skykomish.  There are plenty of other exciting Class III+ to Class IV- type of rapids including "Cable Drop," "Aquagasm," "Marbleshoot," "Railroad," "Surf Wave," and "Fisherman's," to max out your adrenal gland as you wind down the river to our take-out at Big Eddy State Park. The awesome power of this river along with stunning views of the local mountains and birdlife makes this trip a true Northwest can't miss classic!

Available March through July, water levels allowing. Minimum age should be 16.

Happy Folks at the bottom of Boulder Drop!

Not for the faint of heart.

The North Fork of the Skykomish.

Map of the Skykomish RiverWhen the snow pack in Washington 's central Cascades is flowing at its peak the Upper North Fork of the Skykomish is at its best. We call this our "High Adventure" trip as the continuous white water races its way down the North Fork Valley.

The first four miles of the Upper North Fork drops at an astonishing 120 feet per mile making this section about as steep as you can raft. Continuous Class IV rapids come one after another and continuous paddling goes right along with that whitewater. After the first four miles the river's gradient eases a little, but more great white water will come at you fast and furious all the way down to the small Hamlet if Index where we end this amazing raft trip. The High Adventure run flows through the heart of the proposed FederallyProtected Sky Valley Wilderness Area making this trip one of the most beautiful in the Northwest. Previous rafting experienced is recommended and you have to be in good enough shape to paddle non-stop as this trip is the peak in river rafting in Washington State and a few other states for that matter!!! Available Mid-May through June, if the snow pack allows and the minimum recommended age is 18. We are not booking North Fork trips at this time because of the huge flood blocking road access.

      North Fork Skykomish

As of winter of 2006-2008 the road up the North Fork from Index washed out in the largest flood ever recorded. We are currently scouting the area to see if we will be able to run trips on the North Fork in 2008.

Family Floats

Sultan "Sky" Float
This easy floating section of river on the "Sky" provides an opportunity for the whole family to experience the wonders of nature. The overwhelming presence of Mt. Index rising nearly 6,000 ft. from the valley floor reminds you that you're in the heart of the Cascade Mountains. We often see wildlife along the river and share as the guides help to put the whole alpine forest ecosystem into perspective. Meet at Big Eddy State Park where we'll have river booties and P.F.D.'s for you, then hop in the boat for a beautiful ride downstream to Sultan. There you will catch a shuttle and return to the park.

Overnight Trips

Wenatchee & Skykomish Doubleheader
Experience both sides of the Cascades with this two day adventure of whitewater thrills. The Wenatchee River flows from the Glacier Peak area into Washington's sunny apple capital, Wenatchee. For years this river has been a favorite of those who want whitewater and sunshine. Famous Class III rapids and big drops punctuate this river with names like Rock-N-Roll, Drunkards Drop, Granny's, Snowblind and Gorilla Falls. Stunning views of the Stuart Range on the East side of the Enchantment Basin region of the Cascades will awe you as you float the slower sections of this great river. Spend some time in the Bavarian style town of Leavenworth before hopping in your car to drive across beautiful Stevens Pass back into the big "Sky" country. The next morning we're off to run the Class V rapids of Boulder Drop on the Main Skykomish River. Each day includes lunch.
